Portfolio Prep

Ever since I was a sophomore, I heard about senior p ortfolio and how stressful it was for seniors. I realized how much it was once I finally was a senior. Developing your brand is a lot on its own but add in creating a website, getting business cards, envelopes, and making a physical portfolio and it gets stressful. Back in December, I started putting together what I thought was my best work to put into my portfolio. I tweaked a few of my projects that I wanted to use for my printed portfolio and website. I had issues developing my brand which made me fall behind in the aspect of purchases my stationery pieces. While everyone in my class slowly started to have their business cards and envelopes, it made me start to panic and I ordered them once my brand was finalized.  Recently, I had a bit of a mini-crisis. Discoverying My Brand

Typically creating your personal brand is a very hard thing to do but for me in particular it was even harder. I could not think of anything that would really resemble me. There were no little graphics that I could use that would give a good background to who I am as a person. My hobbies and interests wouldn't be able to be put into a graphic that wasn't mediorce or that would be taken seriously. I drew around 150 different logos and sketches which all ended up being just a drawing on a paper. None of them made it out of my sketch books. I wanted to do something with just my name originally or my initials. It was hard for me to use something with my initials in a graphic of some sort due to my initials being MK which is usually seen as Michael Kors. University Reflection

How have your personal and professional goals (including your Personal Quest) evolved during your time at Quinnipiac? When starting at Quinnipiac, my goals were typical goals student would make. I wanted to end every semester with above a 3.0 GPA. I wanted to graduate being an AT as well as get into the PT graduate program. I wanted to join 2 or 3 clubs I wouldn’t be interested in. I wanted to get an internship that would help my future. Some semesters were better than others, per usual. After freshman year, I had achieved my goal of getting above a 3.0 every semester. Fortunately, I am no long an Athletic Training major so my goal of graduating as an AT and furthering my education in PT dissipate after freshman year. I did join a club as well as get a job. Myself nor my parents expected me to have a job throughout college. I started working at the Technology Center my sophomore year. Burn your portfolio... the stuff they don't teach you in design school BUT should.  Creative design and technical skills account for only a fraction of your value of client to an employer. If you want to succeed in your career as a graphic designer, you need to focus time and engery into developing your interpersonal skills. Best graphic designers regularly and purposely go the extra mile! If your boss asks for 2 comps, give him 3. If your boss wants work on his desk by 3pm, get it to him by 2pm. ALWAYS GO THE EXTRA MILE AND EXCEED EXPECTATIONS!! Graphic designers are often known as sensitive, in fact it might just be all artists have thin skin and cannot take criticism.  You WANT a hunger for feedback, advice, and critque whenever you can get it. Feedback is CRITICAL You not only need to learn to welcome feedback and criticism but also learn have to desire it.
